Chapter 30 Two Strange Things Appear!
Chapter 30 Two Strange Things Appear!
Zhao Hai arrived at the refrigerated section of the supermarket.
The glass doors of those refrigerators and freezers had long been shut off, and milky white cold air, like mist, wafted onto his face, carrying a sour, rancid smell. He held his flashlight between his chin and collarbone, the beam piercing through the mist and shining on the rows of cans, reflecting eerie blue spots.
Zhao Hai didn't take the bottled yogurt or milk. He had already gotten those drinks from the previous mala tang restaurant.
The supplies Zhao Hai took were things like canned luncheon meat and canned fruit.
As Zhao Hai picked up the canned goods, the beam of his flashlight swept across the messy ground beside his feet, landing on several cardboard boxes forgotten in a corner. Zhao Hai gently brushed aside the scraps of paper covering them with his toe, and his eyes suddenly lit up—inside were packages of vacuum-sealed frozen food!
"Frozen dumplings," "fresh meat wontons," "custard buns," "glutinous rice shumai"... Although the words "freeze to store" are clearly visible on the packaging, the underground supermarket, while somewhat shady, is still not as cold as a refrigerator or freezer.
Many of these vacuum-packed foods had already begun to spoil, but at least half of the frozen foods escaped spoilage. He picked up a bag of fresh meat wontons and squeezed it firmly through the thick composite packaging film. The wontons inside were still distinct, without any obvious softness or bloating. He then smelled them (through the packaging)—there was no odor. Perhaps it was due to the vacuum and preservation treatment, or perhaps it was simply the luck of the low temperature here; in any case, these were excellent supplies.
These "semi-finished products," which provide carbohydrates and a certain amount of fat and taste far superior to compressed biscuits, are no less valuable than canned goods in the current environment.
He immediately set to work, stuffing over a dozen packets of unmolded and well-preserved dumplings, wontons, steamed buns, and shumai into the side pockets and gaps of his backpack. These soft packages were much easier to fill than hard cans.
His backpack quickly became heavy, making it difficult to stuff anything more in. The twenty or so cans of food he had collected earlier already filled the backpack to the brim, and he had just crammed in more than a dozen vacuum-packed food bags. He weighed the backpack in his hand; the entire backpack weighed at least sixty pounds.
This is all thanks to Chen Zhifu's backpack, which is not only spacious but also of excellent quality!
As he zipped up the last zipper of his backpack, he couldn't help but sigh. "Ugh! This backpack can't hold much at all! I only managed to put in this little bit of stuff before it was full! If only I had one of those storage spaces like those in cultivation novels!"
He muttered to himself, his gaze sweeping over the cans on the shelf, which were still at least half full, a pang of regret in his heart. If only he could take them all…
"Clang... Clang..." Just as Zhao Hai was about to leave.
A series of ear-piercing sounds, the irregular rolling and colliding of metal wheels on the ground, came from the direction of the main shelf area of the supermarket without warning, growing louder as it approached, and were particularly alarming in the dead silence.
Just as Zhao Hai was about to remind the other two, Wang Hu's voice came first.
"Wanyue, Brother Zhao Hai, something strange is happening here!"
"Brother Tiger! Sister Wanyue, I have a weirdo here too!" Zhao Hai shouted loudly to the two of them.
The piercing sound of the wheels, coupled with the eerie atmosphere, made it clear without a doubt that the sound he heard was coming from an eerie place.
As soon as he finished speaking, Zhao Hai picked up his flashlight and shone the beam toward the direction from which the metallic sound came.
As Zhao Hai shone his flashlight, something emerged from behind a row of collapsed promotional displays.
That was a supermarket shopping cart.
The car body was badly rusted, covered with strange dark red stains and uneven dents, as if it had been subjected to countless violent impacts.
Even more horrifying is that it was not propelled by a person, but by a thick, dark shadow that was condensed in the basket and was constantly wriggling slightly. The outline of its twisted limbs could be vaguely seen, as if it were made of countless struggling arms.
The shopping cart moved erratically, its wheels occasionally emitting harsh screeching and clattering sounds. Deep within the empty basket, darkness seemed almost tangible.
"Holy crap! There's even a shopping cart!" Zhao Hai exclaimed, having never seen anything so bizarre before.
"Zhao Hai! Don't confront that weirdo head-on. Let's go to Wang Hu's place first, and then we'll go out together!" Su Wanyue's voice came at this moment.
"Okay!" Zhao Hai replied loudly.
Wang Hu's location was closer to the supermarket exit, so naturally they headed towards him.
Zhao Hai ignored the strangeness in front of him and turned around to run towards Wang Hu.
In just a few seconds, Zhao Hai and Su Wanyue both ran to Wang Hu's side.
"Holy crap! Tiger, yours is even weirder than mine!" Zhao Hai exclaimed.
When Zhao Hai came to Wang Hu's side, he saw a huge pig's head that almost reached the ceiling.
The pig's head had a lifeless bluish-gray skin covered with coarse, stiff black hairs. Its small eyes were a cloudy, milky white with no pupils, yet they seemed to be "staring" at the three of them.
The pig's snout was slightly open, revealing jagged, yellowish-black tusks. Thick saliva dripped from the corners of its mouth, forming long, thin strands. This was definitely not a fresh pig's head, but rather a monster that had been pickled and dried for a long time, yet had strangely "come alive."
After Zhao Hai finished speaking, Wang Hu and Su Wanyue also noticed the strange supermarket shopping cart that was chasing after Zhao Hai.
"Giant Transformation!" Seeing Zhao Hai and Su Wanyue arrive, Wang Hu unhesitatingly unleashed his giant transformation ability.
However, before unleashing his ability, Wang Hu threw his backpack to Zhao Hai, otherwise, with his three-meter-tall stature, the backpack on his back would have been torn apart.
Facing the roaring, charging pig-headed monster, Wang Hu didn't retreat but advanced, stomping his right foot hard and crashing into it like a cannonball! He didn't choose the vulnerable head, but instead slammed into the middle of the pig-headed monster's massive body, which appeared to be slippery and sticky.
"Bang!"
A muffled thud, mixed with the squelching sound of some kind of viscous substance being squeezed out, sent Wang Hu staggering back two steps, cracking the ground beneath his feet. But the pig's head's eerie forward momentum was abruptly halted; several thick strips of flesh twisted and groaned in pain. The enormous pig's head swayed, its murky, milky-white eyes seemingly "focused" on Wang Hu, filled with ferocious rage. Its long, thick arms swept across, bringing a stench!
At the same time, Su Wanyue appeared in front of the pig's head, and her long sword was drawn!
