Chapter 24 First Pot of Gold: Winning HKD 100,000
Chapter 24 First Pot of Gold: Winning HKD 100,000
Guo Tao led Shen Wancheng and the others to the prize redemption area, but wisely avoided getting too close.
Instead, they stood and waited at the glass door of the cubicle.
Shen Mei didn't go in either; she stood next to Guo Tao and kept him company.
Shen Wancheng and Shen Yao handed the betting slip to the front desk staff, who inadvertently called out aloud.
"Wow, you guys actually bet a thousand dollars on number 2."
Shen Wancheng immediately frowned.
Are the staff at the Jockey Club really that unprofessional?
Just then, the door on the other side of the room opened, and a group of people in sharp suits walked out.
I happened to hear the staff member's exclamation.
A middle-aged man walked to the front desk with a cold expression.
"You're fired. Pack your things and leave."
The staff member who exclaimed in surprise panicked instantly.
"Manager, I didn't mean to."
"Our Jockey Club doesn't need unprofessional people. Please leave."
The staff member glanced at Shen Wancheng resentfully, his lips moved, but he didn't dare to make a sound, and turned away.
Shen Wancheng knew that the unspoken words of the staff member were three: nouveau riche.
But Shen Wancheng didn't think there was anything wrong with those three words. They won HK$10, so they were nouveau riche.
Being a nouveau riche is much happier than being envious of nouveau riche.
After firing the staff member, the manager watched them leave with a cold eye before giving Shen Wancheng a professional, formulaic smile.
"Miss, we're ready to process your prize claim now. Would you like cash, or would you like the prize money deposited directly into your bank account?"
Shen Wancheng took out a bank card and handed it to the manager, saying, "Deposit it into the bank account."
"Okay, please wait a moment."
The manager took the bank card with both hands and then handed it to another staff member at the front desk for them to process.
Shen Wancheng watched the manager's actions and couldn't help but admire him in her heart.
As expected of someone who can become a manager in the Hong Kong Jockey Club, an organization second only to the government in Hong Kong, she still greets people like them with a smile and without any arrogance.
Once she has her own company, perhaps she can recruit this person to her company?
Shen Wancheng chuckled inwardly at herself for thinking so far ahead.
"Miss, your bonus has been transferred to your bank card."
"Thank you."
Shen Wancheng took the bank card and turned to leave.
Suddenly, another voice called out to them from behind.
"Ladies, please wait a moment. Our gentleman would like to speak with you for a few minutes."
Shen Wancheng and Shen Yao turned around after hearing the sound.
Shen Wancheng was stunned when she saw the man surrounded by a group of bodyguards in suits.
It turned out to be Xu Pingtao.
What a coincidence!
Shen Wancheng suddenly realized that Shen Yao might not be the only one with the female lead's halo; she might be too.
Shen Wancheng was surprised, but she didn't show it on her face. She smiled politely at Xu Pingtao, who was walking towards them.
"Hello, sir, how can I help you?"
Although Xu Pingtao was of the same generation as Shen Dapeng and Liu Chunhua of the Shen family, he looked very healthy and only looked like a man in his fifties. You couldn't tell that he was nearly seventy years old.
Xu Pingtao had a smile on his face and appeared very approachable.
"Hello. I'm just curious, did you just place a bet on horse number 2?"
Shen Yao was unaware of Xu Pingtao's situation. She hadn't paid attention to the VIP table and didn't know who Xu Pingtao was. When Xu Pingtao asked, she nodded casually.
"Yes, I bet on horse number 2."
Xu Pingtao then asked, "Why did you bet on horse number 2?"
"Why could there be? I'm rooting for horse number 2."
Because of the man in the stands, Shen Yao assumed that he also thought her betting on horse number 2 was a reckless move, so she added another comment.
"Horse number 2 has small white eyes, wide-set eyes, and large, bright eyes that exude calmness. It's clearly an intelligent steed. Its neck and shoulder muscles are well-defined and perfectly proportioned. Its forelegs are straight and strong from both the front and side, indicating it can run very well. It's a fine horse to begin with. The reason others don't vote for it is because they lack vision, not because it's black."
Xu Pingtao's smile deepened.
"Little friend, it seems you know a lot about horses!"
Shen Yao said smugly, "It's alright."
"Horse number 2 has another race next week, remember to come back and watch it if you like it."
"Huh? How did you know?"
Xu Pingtao cleared his throat and mimicked Shen Yao's smug expression.
"Because I am the owner of horse number 2."
Shen Yao asked Shen Wancheng beside her in confusion, "Does the horse owner mean that this horse belongs to this uncle?"
Shen Wancheng nodded to Shen Yao.
Shen Wancheng thought about it for a moment and came up with a plan.
She proactively said to Xu Pingtao, "Congratulations to you, sir, on discovering such a magnificent horse as number 2, and congratulations to your horse on winning today's championship."
"Hahaha." Xu Pingtao laughed heartily, "You're quite the talker, kid."
Xu Pingtao wasn't a good person, but he inexplicably liked Shen Wancheng and Shen Yao in front of him. It was the kind of liking an elder has for a younger person, without any romantic feelings involved. So he didn't call Shen Wancheng and Shen Yao "Miss," but "Little Kids."
Shen Wancheng pressed her advantage and continued speaking.
"My sister really likes horse number 2. Can we get a closer look at it?"
When Shen Wancheng had a general understanding of horse racing in Hong Kong Island, she learned that all the horses participating in the races had owners.
Ordinary citizens simply place bets on horse racing, while wealthy tycoons raise their own horses for racing.
Horses with owners are normally only allowed to approach by their handlers, test riders, and knights, in addition to their owners. Even knights must register before approaching these horses.
Shen Wancheng's request to Xu Pingtao to see the horses was reasonable, because only Xu Pingtao was qualified to allow them to see the horses.
Shen Yao was surprised that Shen Wancheng would make such a request, and looked at Xu Pingtao with anticipation.
Xu Pingtao was a little surprised that Shen Wancheng would make this request, but he was very happy that the No. 2 horse he had casually picked up had won the championship today, so he really agreed.
"The fans of the dark horse show want to see it, and of course I'll grant their wish. Do you have time now? I'd also like to go see it."
Shen Yao nodded like a chick pecking at rice, "I have time."
"Let's go then."
Shen Wancheng walked quickly to the door where Guo Tao and Shen Mei were standing and told them that she and Shen Yao were allowed to see horse number 2.
Although Guo Tao was also full of envy, he did not force Shen Wancheng to take him and Shen Mei with him.
He only said that he would take good care of Shen Mei, and told Shen Wancheng and the others to go without worry.
Shen Wancheng concluded by saying that she and Shen Yao would be able to go back on their own later, and asked Guo Tao to take Shen Mei back first.
Guo Tao said it was no problem, and Shen Mei also told Shen Wancheng to go ahead, as she would have no problem going with Guo Tao.
Relieved, Shen Wancheng caught up with Shen Yao and went to the horse farm with Xu Pingtao to see the horses.
