Chapter 13 The truth is often particularly cruel.
"But as you know, Xiaolin is a nurse, and she has a lot of exams and a lot of pressure. At first, she was fine, but as her belly got bigger and bigger, her physical condition got worse and worse."
When Xiaolin reached the late stage of her pregnancy, my family wanted her to stay home and rest, and she agreed, but only after she completed the last assessment.
However, fate played a cruel trick. That very night, Xiaolin suffered severe abdominal pain and fell into a coma. We rushed her to the hospital, but we couldn't save the baby.
By the end, Lü Hanmo's voice had choked with emotion, "When the doctor brought my son's body out, it felt like my heart had been ripped out, and the pain was so intense I couldn't breathe."
Ultimately, it's my fault as a husband for not being a good enough person. If I hadn't been so busy and had spent every day with her, perhaps this tragedy wouldn't have happened.
"Hanmo, don't say that." Li Xiaolin grabbed Lu Hanmo's shirt, her voice filled with deep guilt and self-blame. "It was my insistence on going to work that caused our son to die in the womb. If anyone is to blame, it's me."
Lu Hanmo gently patted her back, his eyes filled with tenderness.
Then, he asked Ye Jingke with a puzzled look, "We've never mentioned this to anyone, how did you find out?"
Ye Jingke pursed his lips and gestured with his chin towards the girl beside him.
The two looked over at the same time and saw Cheng Ai playing a mobile game with a tense expression, as if she hadn't heard anything.
Lu Hanmo scoffed coldly, then looked away in disappointment. "Jingke, it's fine if you have someone investigate me, but you shouldn't hurt my wife's feelings."
Ye Jingke frowned, about to explain, when Cheng Ai spoke first, "Brother Lü, you misunderstood. I did tell Ye Jingke that."
Then, she tossed her phone aside, crossed her legs, and leaned back lazily in her chair, continuing, "The fetus suffocated and died, and the resentment is too deep. Now it's clinging to you and won't leave. If it's not eliminated soon, Xiaolin and the baby in her belly will be in danger."
Having his bottom line challenged time and again, Lü Hanmo's patience had long since run out.
He stood up angrily, pointed at Cheng Ai, and growled at Ye Jingke, "Mental illness! Absolutely mental illness! You'd better send her back to the mental hospital right now, and don't let her run away and harm anyone again!"
Li Xiaolin awkwardly tugged at Lü Hanmo's sleeve, signaling him to calm down.
As for Ye Jingke, he was not angry. After all, no one could accept such an outrageous thing all at once. "Big brother, it's not too late to get angry after Ai Ai finishes speaking."
"What else is there to say?" Lu Hanmo persisted, his words sharp. "This woman is obviously mentally ill. Even if you have feelings for her, you should break it off as soon as possible!"
Cheng Ai narrowed her eyes slightly, staring at him with a half-smile, "Can I ask you a few questions?"
"I don't have time to waste with you!" Lu Hanmo was furious, looking like he wanted to strangle her.
"Fine." Cheng Ai shrugged helplessly, got up and went upstairs. "Anyway, the infant spirit isn't bothering me. Since you don't appreciate it, I'm going back to my room to sleep. Goodnight."
"Tch! What are you pretending for? You really think you're something special?" Lu Hanmo scoffed, then put his arm around Li Xiaolin's waist and walked outside. "Wife, let's go home."
Ye Jingke panicked and quickly stepped forward to grab Cheng Ai's arm, "Ai Ai, wait a minute."
Then he turned to Lü Hanmo, his face grim, and warned, "This is your last chance. If you leave now, don't blame me for turning a blind eye to your situation later."
Lu Hanmo immediately stopped and turned to stare intently at Ye Jingke.
After a long while, they finally compromised.
He crossed his arms, gritted his teeth, and nodded. "Fine! I'd like to see what earth-shattering things a madman can say!"
Ye Jingke cursed "idiot" in his heart, but showed no sign of it on his face.
He led the girl beside him back to the living room and gently patted her little hand. "Ai Ai, it's up to you now."
"Don't worry." Cheng Ai nodded slightly, a confident smile playing on her lips.
She slowly walked up to Li Xiaolin, which provoked Lü Hanmo to erupt in anger again. "Stay away from my wife, or I'll smash your dog head in!"
"Huh?" Cheng Ai was full of questions, blinking innocently twice. "You got angry at me, so why did you hit the dog? The dog is so cute, how could you be so heartless?"
Lu Hanmo was so choked that he almost vomited blood. The feeling of punching cotton was even more frustrating than eating shit.
Cheng Ai didn't dwell on it any longer. She looked past him and onto the woman behind him, asking directly, "Do you always hear a baby crying?"
Li Xiaolin's expression changed drastically, her eyes widening in disbelief as she stared at her. "How did you know?"
Lu Hanmo frowned, full of suspicion, "Wife, why have you never mentioned this to me before?"
“I…” Li Xiaolin waved her hands frantically and shook her head in anguish, “No…no…when I first lost my son, I was in a daze…I thought the voice I heard was my imagination…”
Later... I gradually got used to falling asleep to the sound of crying... so I stopped thinking about it... and felt there was no need to bother you..."
After she finished speaking, she trembled uncontrollably, stepped forward and grabbed Cheng Ai's hand, and said urgently, "Xiao Ai, what did you mean when you said that the infant spirit was haunting me? Could it be my son?"
Cheng Ai patted her cold hand reassuringly and smiled faintly, "The truth is often particularly cruel. Xiaolin, are you prepared?"
"Just spit it out, stop beating around the bush!" Lu Hanmo urged impatiently.
"Lu Hanmo!" Ye Jingke suddenly shouted angrily, his gaze as cold as a blade as he shot at him, "Watch your words, stop using so many foul language!"
Startled, Lü Hanmo awkwardly shut his mouth.
For some reason, Ye Jingke, despite being the youngest of the three brothers, possessed the strongest aura, inspiring awe in others.
Cheng Ai didn't delay any longer. She reached out and touched Li Xiaolin's abdomen, gently rubbing it. "I can tell that you and Brother Lü have a very good relationship."
Seeing the smug look on Lü Hanmo's face, she lowered her eyes and said, "So it's impossible that you haven't had a single child in the past five years."
I just roughly counted, and including the baby in your belly now, you've been pregnant six times in total.
"What?!" Li Xiaolin covered her mouth in shock, her face as pale as paper. "I go to the hospital for blood tests whenever I feel even slightly unwell, but the results have always been normal!"
Cheng Ai took two steps back, a faint smile playing on her lips. "Of course you won't be able to find anything, because the infant spirits have already devoured all the babies."
"Nonsense!" Lu Hanmo sneered, his expression utterly disdainful. "If Jingke hadn't been here, I would have thrown you out!"
